February 8: Sci Fi and Mindfire get DEAD & DEADER

Sci Fi Pictures and Mindfire Entertainment (ALL SOULS DAY, HOUSE OF THE DEAD movies) have begun production in Los Angeles on DEAD & DEADER, an action/comedy about a Special Forces officer who becomes part-human/part-zombie and must stop the deadly spread of an infection which threatens to turn the entire human population into flesheating ghouls. DEAD & DEADER stars Dean (DRAGON FIGHTER) Cain, Susan Ward (from CRUEL WORLD, pictured), Guy (DON’T SAY A WORD) Torry, John (STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE) Billingsley, Armin (BUFFY) Shimerman, Dean (THE X FILES) Haglund, Ellie (HALLOWEEN 4) Cornell, Peter (CLEAN, SHAVEN) Greene, Colleen (HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER) Camp and Natassia (SKINWALKERS) Malthe. The film is being directed by noted commercials helmer and former visual FX supervisor Patrick Dinhut, from a screenplay by Steve Kriozere and ROOM 6’s Mark A. Altman. The film’s FX magic is being handled by KNB’s Greg Nicotero and Autonomous Effects’ Jason (THE THIRST) Collins.

“DEAD & DEADER is the most fun I’ve had making a movie since FREE ENTERPRISE,” Altman tells Fango. “We have a great cast. It’s sort of 48 HRS. meets BLADE…with zombies. Patrick has brought a really original visual style to the material.”

Mindfire has been on a shooting frenzy over the last 18 months (other productions include DARKROOM and DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE), and DEAD & DEADER offered the busy producers an opportunity to switch gears a bit. “After THE THIRST, which is a really dark, edgy action-packed vampire film, it’s nice to have the chance to do something lighter and more fun,” Altman says. “And so far DEAD & DEADER has been a really cool, quirky ride. I’ve wanted to get back to doing comedy for a while now, and even though DEAD & DEADER is first and foremost a horror/sci-fi film, there’s a healthy dose of humor as well. It’s a welcome change of pace.”

DEAD & DEADER is produced by Mindfire’s Mark Gottwald, Chuck Speed and Altman. This is the latest in a string of undead gigs for the busy FX guys at KNB, after LAND OF THE DEAD and the MASTERS OF HORROR episodes HOMECOMING and HAECKEL’S TALE. “Greg and I have been talking about working together a long time,” says Altman, who palled around with Nicotero at last fall’s Sitges Film Festival in Spain. “We thought this would be a good project to collaborate on while also continuing our long and fruitful association with Jason Collins and his amazing team at Autonomous. It’s a win-win for us.”

Mindfire’s HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2 debuts on the Sci Fi Channel (the initial outlet for DEAD & DEADER) this Saturday, February 11 and will be released on special-edition DVD by Lionsgate on March 28. See FANGORIA #251 (on sale this month) for a look at the company and catch many of the gang
