De Rossi, Cain will bask in’Glow’ of Fox TV telepic

Portia de Rossi and Dean Cain will topline the Fox TV Pictures telepic “The Glow,” lensing in Toronto.

Thriller, slated to air on Fox next season, is being helmed by Craig R. Baxley (“Stephen King’s Rose  Red”); Iain Paterson and Gary Sherman will executive produce. Rounding out the cast are Hal Linden, Dina Merrill, Joe Campanella and Grace Zabriskie.

Story, penned by Sherman, concerns a young Gotham couple, struggling to achieve their ideal lifestyle, when a chance meeting with some elderly benefactors leads to immediate and profound results.

“In the spirit of a classic horror film, we’ve taken a very recognizable, everyday notion and injected something truly ominous in order to surprise our audience,” said Marci Pool, Fox executive veepee of  movies and minis.

De Rossi, repped by ICM, recently wrapped “Cletis Tout” with Tim Allen, Richard Dreyfuss, and Christian Slater. She has also nabbed a role in the romantic comedy “Love Smarts,” which is due to begin shooting at the end of the year in Sydney.

Cain, repped by Writers & Artists, will next be seen in “Rat Race.”

He is currently working on The Glow, a TV-movie with an illustrious cast including Portia de Rossi, Dean Cain, Hal Linden, Joe Campanella, Dina Merrill and Grace Zabriskie.  ”It’s a thriller, almost a horror film,” he revealed. “I’m delighted to get this part. I’m Polish, a building superintendent and I’m in a significant part of the action. I’m a bad guy, a killer,” he said gleefully. “A nasty killer role,” he reiterated, knocking wood.

Downie is especially gleeful because he’d originally auditioned for another role, that of a good guy. The writer was in attendance and suggested that he could play the part of Buddy.

“They asked, ‘Can you do a Polish accent?’ I said, ‘I normally consult my Polish accent coach, who works at my local delicatessen.’ “

He also consulted his hair person. Between them, they got the right tone.

“Portia told me I scared her.”

Downie also supplies the voice of a scientist for the Japanese video game Resident Evil Zero.

“It’s a stern, principal voice,” he explained. “Initially, they wanted a Hannibal Lecter voice. Then they asked, ‘Could you do a gravel-voiced Southern colonel?’ So I did a voice as low as I could go and they dropped it (electronically) another several layers. I didn’t even recognize my own voice.”

Downie goes right from The Glow into the Tomato.

“I finish The Glow at 12: 30 p.m. (today) and I open tonight.”
